Speechless

Have you ever felt something very deeply and tried to explain to someone else what you were feeling; instead, you found yourself absolutely speechless?  The hymn, “The Love of God,” speaks to the impossibility of our ever fully being able to describe how deeply we are loved by God.

In Ephesians 3:19, the Apostle Paul tells the church that he prays that they will “know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge.” How can we know something that defies knowledge?  In verses 17 & 18 Paul explains that this knowledge is available only through Christ who dwells in our hearts through faith.

In other words, only Christ Himself can communicate to me, through His presence in my heart, the breadth, length, height, and depth of His love for me. People can tell me all day that Jesus loves me (and we do need to be reminded, just as we need to remind others), but until I get it straight from Him, until I truly experience it, I’m clueless.

His love for me- it isn’t an emotion, it’s a “knowing” which grips my soul so firmly that it redefines my entire identity. Maybe I won’t ever be able to fully understand the love of God, but that’s okay- I have all eternity to experience it.
